There are coexist tombs of three philosophers, sociologists in Highgate Cemetery in London.

  • Karl Marx (Conflict theorist)
  • Herbert Spencer (Social evolution theorist)
  • Erich Hobsbawm (Marxist historical theorist)

1.

Exactly 140 years ago, Engels stood in this place and lamented that Marx had discovered two laws: 1) Natural law was discovered by Darwin, and social law was discovered by Marx; 2) Surplus value, which is the main law of the current system, was discovered.

2.

It was Darwin who wrote the book “Origin of Species” who replaced the belief that human is a creation of god or that human was brought to earth from an alien planet with the belief that human is a biological animal, namely, human became being through evolution. Sociologist Spencer theorized that precisely this principle is valid for even society. Spencer’s tomb was placed in front of the tomb of Marx.

3.

Hobsbawm investigated modern world history strictly. As well as he is a big thinker who has established law that how to change it. Perhaps Hobsbawm precepted “bury me beside the Marx”, otherwise his family insisted to bury him beside the Marx.
